平溪老街 介紹

Pingxi Old Street is full of rustic charm. Along the sloping hillside and both sides of the railway, you can see a sequence of traditional houses and buildings. It is also the location of a famous scene in Taiwan's popular movie "You Are the Apple of My Eye", where the protagonist releases sky lanterns to make a wish. Most of the nearby stores are traditional grocery stores, hardware stores, and snack shops, reflecting the simple daily life of the local residents. The classic mountain town railway tour is a must-do activity in Pingxi. Every time a train passes by the towering railway bridge above the old street, the unique environmental sound of "rumbling" echoes through Pingxi's streets. This hundred-year-old coal-mining town still retains its traditional strip-style houses and shops with a Japanese colonial-era style, giving the streets an elegant Japanese atmosphere. The Eight Immortals Cave at Guanyin Rock and the air raid shelter and Peace Bell left over from the end of the Japanese colonial period are good places for visitors to explore and discover. Pingxi Old Street has many popular local snacks. Don't forget to try some of these snacks, as they are sure to give you an unforgettable gastronomic experience at an affordable price. On the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year, Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is held. Sky lanterns are said to have been invented by Kongming during the Three Kingdoms Period, firstly as a means to convey military messages. In the past, mountain bandits often appeared in the Pingxi area, and sky lanterns were used as a signal to report peace. In the 1990s, Pingxi chose sky lanterns as a special folk activity to boost tourism and counter population outflow. Now, Pingxi's Sky Lantern Festival has become an important event during Taiwan's Lantern Festival, known as the "northern sky lanterns and southern beehive firecrackers". The festival has received international media coverage, making it the most representative festival event in New Taipei City.
